‘Good Morning America’ Contributor Mentions Discount Plan Growth

Updated: 2/26/2020

The idea of a discount club where you can save a substantial amount of money on health care isn’t a new one, but many people have never even heard of it.

Good Morning America

Good Morning America featured the concept on Wednesday. The show’s personal finance contributor Mellody Hobson, president of Ariel Investments, mentioned discount plan growth. Good Morning America listed some numbers from the National Coalition of Health Care saying that American families spent approximately $6,000 on health insurance and other medical costs last year, and by 2012 that number may rise to $9,000.

Discount Plans

A discount plan could help reduce that burden by lowering the price on health care, often regardless of pre-existing conditions. The patient pays the health care provider directly rather than juggling claims and deductibles.

Policyholders

She mentioned the discount system could be beneficial for everyone but said it could especially benefit people in these situations:

  • They currently have no form of insurance
  • They have used up the yearly maximum with their insurance and would have to pay out of pocket for any additional work
  • They have a large deductible with their insurance plan

Hobson emphasized that discount plans are not insurance. You can’t be denied, and there is no deductible.

Careington Dental Plan

She listed Careington as a good example of this. She also mentioned that some plans include discounts on dental work and vision care all for one low monthly fee. The Careington Dental Plan comes with a free vision plan and other benefits.

Dental Health

A recent Gallup-Healthways poll found that last year, 34% of the American population didn’t visit a dentist at all. Couple that with the fact that tooth decay affects between 60 to 90% of teenagers and adults, according to the World Health Organization, and discount plans become more and more attractive.
